Ingredients

  • 1.3 cups plus light
  • 40  egg bread loaf - crusts 1-inch-thick
  • large egg yolk 
  • large eggs 
  • 1.3 teaspoons ground cardamom 
  • tablespoons juice of lemon fresh
  • tablespoon lemon zest grated
  • 1.3 cups orange marmalade 
  • tablespoons orange zest grated
  • 10 servings powdered sugar 
  • teaspoons sugar 
  • 0.8 cup whipping cream 
  • 1.3 cups milk whole

Directions

  1. Butter 15 x 10 x 2-inch glass baking dish.
  2. Spread marmalade evenly over 1 side of each bread slice.
  3. Cut slices diagonally in half, forming triangles. Arrange triangles crosswise in dish, marmalade side up and overlapping slightly.
  4. Whisk milk and next 7 ingredients in large bowl.
  5. Pour custard over bread.
  6. Let bread stand 1 hour, basting occasionally, or cover and refrigerate overnight.
  7. Mix first 5 ingredients in small bowl, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  8. Let stand at least 1 hour. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)
  9. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  10. Bake French toast, uncovered, until puffed and golden brown, about 50 minutes.
  11. Sprinkle with powdered sugar; serve with citrus syrup.
