Maple and Sweet Potato Buns: A Vegetarian Delight

For all the vegetarian food enthusiasts out there, get ready to indulge in the delightful fusion of flavors in these Maple and Sweet Potato Buns. With a caloric breakdown that leans heavily towards carbs, these buns are the perfect comfort food that won't leave you feeling weighed down. The combination of sweet potatoes and maple syrup, enhanced by the subtle hint of maple extract, creates a unique taste that's both comforting and refreshing.

These buns are not just about the taste; they're also about the texture. The outer layer gets beautifully browned in the oven, while the inside remains soft and fluffy, thanks to the use of bread flour and the kneading process that ensures a smooth and elastic dough. The addition of unsalted butter adds a touch of richness that elevates the overall experience.

Baking these buns is a relatively straightforward process that requires a bit of patience, especially during the proofing stages. The dough needs time to double in size, and so do the buns after they've been shaped. This slow rise not only makes the buns tastier but also results in a more tender crumb.

Whether you're looking for a unique side dish for your holiday table or a delicious breakfast option, these Maple and Sweet Potato Buns are sure to impress. Their versatility also makes them a great addition to your packed lunch or a perfect snack to enjoy with your favorite spread. So, why not give them a try and experience a bread baking adventure that's both vegetarian and utterly satisfying?

Ingredients

  • 13.5 ounces bread flour
  • teaspoons yeast instant
  • teaspoon maple extract
  • tablespoons maple syrup
  • teaspoon salt
  • cup sweet potatoes and into mashed
  • tablespoons butter unsalted
  • cup water lukewarm

Equipment

  • bowl
  • baking sheet
  • oven
  • plastic wrap
  • stand mixer

Directions

  1. Combine the yeast, water, and maple syrup and 2 cups of flour in the bowl of your stand mixer. Stir to combine and set aside for 10 minutes to get bubbly.
  2. Add the remaining bread flour, sweet potatoes, and maple extract. Knead with the dough hook until you have a smooth, elastic dough.
  3. Add the salt and the butter and continue kneading until both are incorporated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set aside until the dough has doubled in size - about an hour and 15 minutes.
  4. Flour your work surface, line a baking sheet with a sheet of parchment, and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Turn out the dough and divide it into 15 pieces. Form each into a ball and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside until the rolls are doubled in size, about 40 minutes.
  5. Remove the plastic wrap and bake at 350 degrees until the buns are nicely browned, about 30 minutes.
  6. Place the buns on a rack to cool.
