  • teaspoon baking soda 
  • 0.8 cup butter at room temperature
  • teaspoon cinnamon 
  •  eggs 
  • cups flour sifted
  • cup granulated sugar plus more for rolling cookies
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cloves 
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground ginger 
  • teaspoon juice of lemon 
  • tablespoons blackstrap molasses 
  • 0.5 teaspoon nutmeg freshly ground
  • cup powdered sugar 
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 35
  2. In a large bowl, cream 1 cup granulated sugar with butter until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  3. Mix in egg and molasses.
  4. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and spices.
  5. Add to butter mixture and blend well.
  6. Fill a shallow bowl with granulated sugar. Break off walnut-size pieces of dough and roll into balls; roll balls in sugar. Arrange on greased cookie sheets and bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  7. Transfer to cooling racks.
  8. Combine powdered sugar with 1 tbsp. water and stir until smooth, then stir in lemon juice.
  9. Drizzle glaze over cookies.
