Ingredients

  • 0.7 cup buttermilk 
  • 12 ounce ground ham sausage 
  • cups self-rising flour 
  • 0.3 cup shortening

Directions

  1. Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat, stirring until it crumbles and is no longer pink.
  2. Drain well, and set aside.
  3. Cut shortening into flour with a pastry blender until crumbly; add buttermilk, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened.
  4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead 3 to 4 times.
  5. Pat or roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
  6. Sprinkle sausage over dough, gently pressing into dough; cut with a 2 1/2-inch round cutter.
  7. Place on lightly greased baking sheets.
  8. Bake at 450 for 8 to 10 minutes.
  9. NOTE: For testing purposes only, we used Smithfield ham sausage.
