Welcome to the delightful world of homemade Italian bread! If you’ve ever walked past a bakery and been captivated by the warm, inviting aroma of freshly baked bread, then this recipe is for you. Italian Bread II is not only a treat for the senses but also a fantastic addition to any meal, whether it’s a cozy family dinner or a festive gathering with friends.

This vegetarian and dairy-free recipe is perfect for those who are looking to enjoy a delicious loaf without compromising on dietary preferences. With a preparation time of just 160 minutes, you’ll find that the process of making this bread is as rewarding as the final product. The combination of active dry yeast, olive oil, and a touch of brown sugar creates a beautifully textured loaf that is both crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.

What sets this recipe apart is the unique tip of giving your bread a quick reheat before serving, which enhances its crustiness and flavor. Imagine slicing into a warm loaf, the steam rising as you break it apart, ready to be slathered with your favorite spreads or served alongside a hearty soup. Whether you’re a seasoned baker or a novice in the kitchen, this Italian bread will surely impress and satisfy. So, roll up your sleeves and let’s get baking!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 teaspoons yeast dry
  • tablespoon brown sugar
  • tablespoon cornmeal
  •  eggs
  • 1.5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • tablespoon sesame seed
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • tablespoon water
  • 1.1 cups water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)

Equipment

  • frying pan
  • baking sheet
  • oven
  • bread machine

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients except egg, 1 tablespoon water, sesame seeds, and cornmeal into your bread machine in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Select the dough cycle.
  2. Divide dough into 2 parts and form into loaves.
  3. Sprinkle cornmeal on greased baking sheet.
  4. Place loaves on pan seam side down.
  5. Brush top of loaves with water.
  6. Let rise til double, about 50 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  8. Brush loaves with egg wash.
  9. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Make 4 cuts about 1/4 inch deep across top of log.
  10. Place a pan of hot water in bottom of oven.
  11. Bake bread for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden. To make a nice crusty bread, bake bread in the afternoon and pop into oven again for 5 minutes before meal. Makes a very crusty bread! You would be surprised how much better it is if you heat it that last 5 minutes. Try it. I learned this in a bread machine class!
