This Sausage and Swiss Chard Strata is the perfect dish to serve for brunch or dinner. It's a hearty and flavorful dish that's sure to impress your family and friends. The combination of sweet Italian sausage, Swiss chard, and Gruyere cheese creates a delicious and satisfying meal. This strata is also a great make-ahead option, as it can be prepared the night before and baked the next day. Simply assemble the ingredients, let the strata sit overnight, and then pop it in the oven when you're ready to serve. The crusty baguette slices add a nice texture contrast to the dish, and the coarse mustard provides a subtle kick. Don't skip the step of letting the strata sit for 10 minutes before baking, as this helps ensure that the bread absorbs the egg mixture and results in a moist and tender dish. Overall, this sausage and Swiss chard strata is a delicious and comforting meal that's perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • pound ground sausage sweet italian
  •  shallots finely chopped
  • pound swiss chard diced rinsed
  • serving coarse mustard
  •  crusty baguette cut into ½-inch slices
  • 2.5 cups milk whole
  • large eggs lightly beaten
  • ounces gruyere cheese shredded

Equipment

  • bowl
  • frying pan
  • oven
  • whisk
  • baking pan
  • wooden spoon
  • aluminum foil

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high.
  3. Add sausage and cook, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, until browned, 5 minutes.
  4. Transfer sausage to a small bowl, leaving behind as much fat as possible.
  5. Add shallots and chard stems to skillet and cook over medium until shallots are translucent, 3 minutes.
  6. Add a little water to pan and cook, stirring and scraping up browned bits from skillet with spoon.
  7. Add chard leaves and cook, stirring occasionally, until wilted, 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Spread half the sausage in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish and top with half the chard mixture. Top with bread, overlapping slices slightly. Top with remaining sausage and chard mixture. In a large bowl, whisk together milk and eggs, season with salt and pepper, and pour evenly over top. Firmly press on strata to submerge bread in egg mixture. Cover dish tightly with foil and let sit 10 minutes (or refrigerate up to overnight).
  9. Bake strata 45 minutes. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese, and bake until cheese melts and egg mixture is mostly absorbed and set in center, 6 to 10 minutes.
  10. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.
