There's nothing quite like the classic indulgence of homemade shortbread to bring a touch of warmth and sweetness to any occasion. This delightful treat, with its buttery richness and crumbly texture, is the perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth without overwhelming your palate. Whether enjoyed with a cup of tea or served as a sumptuous dessert at the end of a meal, shortbread has a simple elegance that captivates everyone.

What makes this recipe particularly enchanting is its versatility; while the traditional version is utterly divine on its own, you can easily elevate it by adding chopped toasted nuts for an extra layer of flavor and texture. This variation not only adds a delightful crunch but also complements the melt-in-your-mouth quality of the shortbread. In just under an hour, you can create eight scrumptious servings that will surely impress family and friends.

With just a handful of pantry staples, the process is wonderfully straightforward. The charming aroma of the butter and sugar blending together will beckon you and your loved ones to gather around the kitchen, eagerly anticipating the moment when these golden bars emerge from the oven. So, put on your apron and let’s create this timeless dessert that celebrates the art of simple yet delicious baking!

Ingredients

  • cup flour all-purpose
  • 0.3 cup superfine granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup optional: nuts toasted chopped
  • 0.1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup butter unsalted softened
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla

Equipment

  • bowl
  • baking sheet
  • oven
  • knife
  • spatula

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Blend together butter, sugar, vanilla, and salt in a bowl with a fork until combined well. Sift flour into butter mixture and blend with fork until mixture forms a soft dough.
  3. Transfer dough to an ungreased large baking sheet and pat into a 9- by 4 1/2-inch rectangle. Crimp edges decoratively and prick dough all over with tines of a fork. Score dough crosswise with the back of a knife into 8 sections. If desired, sprinkle with chopped toasted nuts and press gently into dough with your fingertips.
  4. Bake shortbread in middle of oven until edges are golden, about 15 minutes.
  5. Cool shortbread on baking sheet on a rack 10 minutes, then cut into slices (while still warm) with a sharp knife.
  6. Transfer slices with a spatula to rack to cool completely.
