  • 0.5 cup sugar 
  • tablespoon cornstarch 
  • pounds cherries red pitted
  • 0.3 teaspoon almond extract 
  • 0.8 cup flour all-purpose
  • 0.3 cup cocoa powder 
  • tablespoon sugar 
  • 1.5 teaspoons double-acting baking powder 
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • tablespoons butter 
  • 0.5 cup milk 
  • serving whipped cream

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 400°F.
  2. Mix 1/2 cup sugar and the cornstarch in 2-quart saucepan. Stir in cherries. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Boil and stir 1 minute. Stir in almond extract.
  3. Pour into ungreased 2-quart casserole; keep hot in oven.
  4. Mix flour, cocoa, 1 tablespoon sugar, the baking powder and salt in small bowl.
  5. Cut in butter, using pastry blender or crisscrossing 2 knives, until mixture looks like fine crumbs. Stir in milk. Drop dough by 6 spoonfuls onto hot fruit mixture.
  6. Bake uncovered 25 to 30 minutes or until topping is set.
  7. Serve warm with cream.
