  •  purée of usa bartlett pear red firm cored ripe unpeeled halved cut lengthwise into 1/3-inch-thick slices
  • tablespoons butter divided
  • large eggs 
  • 0.8 cup brown sugar packed ()
  • 1.3 teaspoons ground cardamom divided
  • cup pomegranate juice 
  • teaspoons vanilla extract 
  • cup milk whole

Directions

  1. Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, and 1/2 teaspooncardamom to blend in 15x10x2-inch glassbaking dish.
  2. Add bread slices; let stand untilegg mixture is absorbed, turning bread slicesoccasionally with spatula, about 10 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, melt 1 tablespoon butter inlarge nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add pears; sauté until beginning to soften,about 3 minutes.
  5. Transfer pears to plate.
  6. Add2 tablespoons butter to skillet; stir to melt.
  7. Add pomegranate juice, sugar, and remaining3/4 teaspoon cardamom; simmer until liquidis slightly thickened and syrupy, about 5minutes.
  8. Remove sauce from heat.
  9. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter ongriddle or in another large nonstick skilletover medium heat.
  10. Add bread slices and cookuntil golden brown, about 3 minutes per side.
  11. Cut French toast slices diagonally in half;divide among plates. Top with pear slices,spoon sauce over, and serve.
