Ingredients

  • small onion thinly sliced cut in half and ( 7 cups)
  • tablespoon butter melted
  • tablespoons sugar 
  •  bay leaves dried
  • 1.5 pounds stew meat 
  • 31.5 ounces beef consomme canned
  • 0.3 cup apple juice dry
  • cup apple juice 
  • 0.3 teaspoon thyme leaves dried
  • slices bread french toasted ( 1/)
  • ounces swiss cheese shredded

Directions

  1. Toss onions, butter and sugar in 5- to 6-quart slow cooker. Top
  2. with bay leaves and beef.
  3. Cover and cook on low heat setting 9 to 10 hours or until onions
  4. are deep brown.
  5. Stir in beef consommé, sherry, apple juice and thyme. Increase
  6. heat setting to high. Cover and cook 10 minutes or until hot.
  7. Remove
  8. bay leaves.
  9. To serve, spoon into ovenproof soup bowls and top each serving
  10. with slice of toast and 1/4 cup cheese. If desired, broil with tops 6
  11. inches from heat 3 to 5 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and begins to
  12. brown.
