Indulge in the ultimate comfort food experience with the Big Bacon Burger, a hearty main course that promises an explosion of savory flavors in every bite. This impressive dish is perfect for those who crave a substantial lunch or dinner that feels like a celebration, delivering a staggering 1,125 calories of pure satisfaction across four generous servings. What sets this recipe apart is the incredible depth of flavor achieved by the house-made onion jam, which balances the richness of the beef with a subtle sweetness and tangy kick from apple cider vinegar and orange juice. The cooking process allows for flexibility, whether you prefer the smoky char of an outdoor grill or the convenience of a stovetop skillet, ensuring you can achieve medium-rare perfection with ease. The star of the show is undoubtedly the patty itself, crafted from 1.5 pounds of ground chuck and enriched with a surprising but delicious addition of spinach, Worcestershire sauce, and a whole egg, creating a moist, flavorful, and slightly herbaceous bite that holds together beautifully. As the patties cook, they are topped with melting slices of Jack cheese and crisp, crisped bacon, adding layers of salty crunch and creamy richness. To tie it all together, the toasted Kaiser rolls are spread with a tangy mayonnaise base, sandwiching the burger along with the homemade jam and thinly sliced red onions. With a caloric breakdown heavily weighted towards satisfying fats and proteins, this burger is a feast for both the palate and the senses, making it an unforgettable centerpiece for any gathering or a luxurious treat for a quiet evening at home.

Directions

  1. Watch how to make this recipe.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the spinach, Worcestershire, egg, and salt and pepper, to taste. With a whisk, mix the ingredients until egg is broken up and incorporated.
  3. Add the meat and with your hands, mix until thoroughly combined. Shape the meat mixture into 4 even patties, to fit the size of the kaiser roll, and put a 1/4-inch slight dimple in the middle of each patty to allow it to cook evenly.
  4. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Alternately, heat a grill to medium (350 degrees F) and rub the grate with a towel dipped in oil.
  5. Heat the broiler on low heat.
  6. Add the patties to the skillet, and cook for about 4 to 6 minutes. Flip the burgers and cook another 4 to 6 minutes for medium-rare burgers. Alternately, grill the patties uncovered for 4 to 6 minutes, then flip and grill for another 4 to 6 minutes. Top each patty with a piece of cheese and put under the broiler to melt the cheese. Alternately, close the grill top, and cook until the cheese is melted.
  7. For the each burger, spread the bottom of the roll with 1/4 of the mayonnaise.
  8. Put the burger on the mayonnaise and top with 2 slices of the bacon and some of the onions. Cover with the top of the roll and serve.
  9. Combine all the ingredients, except the onions and bay leaf, in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, and then bring to a boil. When the mixture comes to a boil, stir in the onion.
  10. Remove the pan from the heat and add the bay leaf.
  11. Let sit at room temperature until cool, at least 1 hour.
  12. Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl until evenly mixed. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
