Ingredients

  • 0.3 cup butter melted
  • 0.5 cup plus light
  • 0.5 teaspoon cream of tartar 
  •  eggs separated
  • cup evaporated milk 
  • 0.5 cup flour all-purpose
  • 18 inch pie crust dough 
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • cups water 
  • cups granulated sugar white

Directions

  1. Beat together egg yolks, evaporated milk, syrup, melted butter or margarine, vanilla, 1/2 cup sugar, and flour.
  2. Brown 2 cups sugar in an iron skillet until light brown.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. Add water; and return to heat until sugar dissolves.
  5. Pour in egg yolk mixture. Cook until thickened, then simmer 5 minutes.
  6. Pour filling into 2 baked pie shells.
  7. Beat egg whites until foamy.
  8. Add cream of tartar and 1/2 cup sugar; continue to beat until stiff peaks form.
  9. Spread meringue over pies, sealing the edges.
  10. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for about 15 minutes.
