  • teaspoons baking soda 
  •  eggs lightly beaten
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • teaspoons ground allspice 
  • teaspoons ground ginger 
  • 0.3 cup blackstrap molasses 
  • 0.3 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.8 cup shortening 
  • 0.3 cup sugar 
  • cup sugar

Directions

  1. Beat shortening at medium speed of an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add 1 cup sugar, beating well.
  2. Add egg and molasses, mixing well.
  3. Combine flour and next 4 ingredients, stirring well. Gradually add flour mixture to creamed mixture, mixing well. Cover and chill 1 hour.
  4. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, and roll balls in 1/4 cup sugar.
  5. Place 2 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets.
  6. Bake at 375 for 9 minutes.
  7. Remove from cookie sheets, and let cool on wire racks.
