  • tablespoon cocoa powder 
  • cup dates chopped
  •  eggs lightly beaten
  • 1.8 cups flour all-purpose
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.5 cup semi chocolate chips 
  • cup shortening 
  • cup sugar 
  • teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • 0.5 cup walnut pieces chopped
  • cup water

Directions

  1. In a small saucepan, bring water and dates to a boil.
  2. Remove from heat; cool. In a bowl, cream together sugar and shortening.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla; mix well.
  4. Combine flour, cocoa and salt; add to creamed mixture.
  5. Add dates and cooking liquid; mix well.
  6. Place in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan.
  7. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and walnuts.
  8. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes.
  9. Remove to a wire rack to cool.
