Ingredients

  • teaspoon baking soda 
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
  • cups dates chopped
  •  eggs 
  • 1.5 cups flour all-purpose
  • 0.5 cup nuts chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • ounces semi chocolate chips 
  • 0.7 cup shortening 
  • cup sugar 
  • cup water hot

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine dates and water; set aside to cool (do not drain). In a large bowl, cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs.
  2. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually added to creamed mixture. Stir in dates.
  3. Pour into a greased and floured 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan.
  4. Combine the topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter.
  5. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
