Ingredients

  • teaspoons baking soda 
  • tablespoons cinnamon 
  • cup brown sugar dark packed
  • 0.5 cup blackstrap molasses dark
  •  eggs beaten
  • 4.5 cups flour all-purpose
  • teaspoon ground cloves 
  • teaspoons ground ginger 
  • cup brown sugar light packed
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • 1.5 cups shortening 
  • 72 servings garnish: sugar

Directions

  1. Combine eggs, sugars, shortening and molasses in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, sift together remaining ingredients except garnish.
  2. Gradually add flour mixture to egg mixture; cover and chill thoroughly.
  3. Roll dough into one-inch balls.
  4. Dip tops into sugar and place on lightly greased baking sheets, sugar-side up. Press tops down lightly with a fork to flatten.
  5. If desired, sprinkle each cookie with a few drops of water for a more crackled surface.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
