Ingredients

  • teaspoons baking soda 
  • cup brown sugar packed
  •  eggs 
  • 2.3 cups flour all-purpose
  • 48 servings granulated sugar 
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon 
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cloves 
  • teaspoon ground ginger 
  • 0.3 cup blackstrap molasses 
  • 0.3 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.8 cup shortening

Directions

  1. Mix shortening, brown sugar, molasses and egg thoroughly in large bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients except granulated sugar. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
  2. Heat oven to 375F. Grease cookie sheet. Shape dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. Dip tops in granulated sugar.
  3. Place balls, sugared sides up, 3 inches apart on cookie sheet.
  4. Sprinkle each with 2 or 3 drops of water.
  5. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or just until set but not hard.
  6. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack.
