  • teaspoon double-acting baking powder 
  • teaspoon baking soda 
  • large eggs 
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • cup granulated sugar 
  • 0.3 teaspoon ground allspice 
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon 
  • 0.3 teaspoon ground cloves 
  • teaspoon ground ginger 
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg 
  • 0.3 cup blackstrap molasses 
  • 0.3 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.8 cup shortening 
  • cup sparkling sugar

Directions

  1. Beat shortening at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy. Gradually add 1 cup granulated sugar, beating well.
  2. Add egg and molasses; beat well.
  3. Combine flour and next 8 ingredients, stirring well.
  4. Add one-fourth of flour mixture at a time to shortening mixture, beating at low speed after each addition until blended. Cover and chill 1 hour.
  5. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, and roll in sparkling sugar.
  6. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
  7. Bake at 375 for 9 to 11 minutes. (Tops will crack.)
  8. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
