There is nothing quite like the nostalgic comfort of a classic hot dog, but sometimes we crave something a little more creative and hearty for our gatherings. Enter "Mom's Hot Dog Boats," a delightful twist on the traditional snack that transforms a simple summer treat into a satisfying, oven-baked masterpiece perfect for antipasti, starters, or any casual get-together. This recipe cleverly repurposes the iconic hot dog bun by slicing down the center to create a cozy vessel for a creamy, homemade mashed potato filling, turning every bite into a unique culinary experience.

What makes this dish truly special is its ability to combine the savory, smoky flavor of grilled hot dogs with the rich, buttery warmth of freshly mashed russet potatoes. The process is surprisingly straightforward yet yields impressive results: you simply boil and mash the potatoes with a touch of milk, butter, salt, and pepper to create a fluffy base, then stuff it into the halved hot dogs. The magic happens under the broiler, where slices of processed cheese melt into a gooey, golden blanket over the hot potato mixture, binding everything together with irresistible texture and flavor.

Best of all, this recipe is naturally gluten-free, making it an inclusive option for families with dietary restrictions without sacrificing any taste. Whether you are hosting a party, looking for a quick 45-minute meal, or just want to impress guests with a fun appetizer, these hot dog boats offer a deliciously innovative way to enjoy a familiar favorite. The contrast between the soft, warm potato filling and the slightly crispy, cheesy top creates a mouthwatering sensation that is sure to become a new family favorite. So, gather your ingredients, fire up the broiler, and get ready to serve up some truly memorable comfort food that everyone will love.

Ingredients

  • 0.3 cup butter
  • pinch ground pepper black
  • 16 ounce hot dogs
  • 0.5 cup warm milk
  •  processed cheese singles cut in half kraft® (such as )
  •  russet potatoes cubed peeled
  • 0.8 teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • sauce pan
  • oven
  • pot
  • baking pan
  • broiler

Directions

  1. Place the potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.
  2. Drain and allow to steam dry for a minute or two. Return to the pot, and mash with the milk, butter, salt, and pepper.
  3. While the potatoes are boiling, place the hot dogs in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then keep warm on low until the potatoes have been mashed.
  4. Preheat the oven's broiler and set the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source.
  5. Cut the hot dogs down the center, leaving the two halves attached (like a hot dog bun). Stuff the hot dogs with mashed potatoes and place into a baking dish.
  6. Place half a slice of cheese on top of each hot dog.
  7. Broil in the preheated oven until the cheese is bubbly and has melted, about 1 minute.
