There is something undeniably comforting about a hearty, homemade Hoppin' John that comes together with deep, savory flavors and a satisfying texture. This particular version elevates the classic Southern dish by incorporating white wine and a slow-simmered ham bone, creating a rich broth that coats every grain of rice and bean perfectly. What makes this recipe truly special for modern kitchens is its versatility; it is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free, making it an excellent choice for those with dietary restrictions without sacrificing any of the robust taste that defines a traditional main course.

As you begin cooking, the aroma of sautéed onions, celery, and garlic mingling with the warmth of the ham bone will immediately transport you to a cozy kitchen filled with anticipation. The combination of tender black-eyed peas and fluffy white rice offers a delightful contrast in texture, while the subtle notes of thyme and bay leaves add an aromatic depth that lingers on the palate. Whether you are planning a quick weeknight dinner or hosting a gathering for eight, this dish serves as a satisfying centerpiece that feels both rustic and refined.

With a preparation time of just 90 minutes, you will have a complete meal ready that provides a solid 454 calories per serving, packed with 69% carbohydrates to keep you fueled throughout the day. The method is straightforward yet rewarding, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully as the rice absorbs the seasoned broth. I highly recommend taking the time to brown the ham bone thoroughly, as this step is crucial for unlocking the full potential of the dish. Serve it hot, perhaps with a simple green salad on the side, and enjoy a meal that feels like a warm embrace from your ancestors, crafted with love and modern convenience.

Ingredients

  •  bay leaves
  • 45 ounce black-eyed peas rinsed drained canned
  • stalks celery chopped
  • 1.3 cups chicken broth as needed
  • 0.3 teaspoon thyme leaves dried
  • cup cooking wine dry white
  • cloves garlic minced
  • cup ham chopped
  • large meaty ham bone
  • tablespoon olive oil
  • 1.5 cups onion chopped
  • servings salt and pepper to taste
  • cups water
  • cups rice white uncooked

Equipment

  • sauce pan
  • pot
  • dutch oven

Directions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven or soup pot over medium-high heat and brown the ham bone on all sides, about 15 minutes. Reduce heat to medium and stir in the onion, celery, and garlic, and cook until the onion is translucent, stirring often, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the black-eyed peas, 2 cups of water, chicken broth, wine, ham, bay leaves, thyme, salt, and pepper; stir. Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the mixture is thickened and the flavors have blended, 30 to 60 minutes.
  3. Add more chicken stock if the mixture is too thick.
  4. About 30 minutes before serving, bring the rice and 4 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed, 20 to 25 minutes.
  5. Let the rice stand covered for about 10 minutes to absorb steam.
  6. Remove the ham bone from the soup, cutting any extra ham off the bone and returning it to the pot. Discard the bone. Stir the cooked rice into the black-eyed pea mixture until well combined and serve.
