  • 0.3 teaspoon pepper black freshly ground
  •  garlic clove peeled halved
  • ounces gruyere cheese shredded
  • 0.3 teaspoon kosher salt 
  • Dash grating nutmeg whole grated
  • ounce parmesan fresh grated
  • tablespoons shallots minced
  • tablespoon butter unsalted softened
  • 2.5 cups milk whole
  • pounds yukon gold potatoes peeled cut into 1/8-inch-thick slices

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 37
  2. Rub a broiler-safe 11 x 7-inch baking dish with garlic; discard garlic. Coat dish with butter.
  3. Combine milk and next 5 ingredients (through potatoes) in a skillet; bring to a simmer. Cook 8 minutes or until potatoes are almost tender. Spoon potato mixture into prepared baking dish.
  4. Sprinkle with cheeses.
  5. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes.
  6. Preheat broiler. Broil 3 minutes or until golden.
  7. Let stand 10 minutes.
