Ingredients

  • teaspoons baking soda 
  •  eggs 
  • 2.3 cups flour all-purpose sifted
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon 
  • teaspoon ground ginger 
  • 0.5 cup blackstrap molasses 
  • 0.3 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.5 cup shortening 
  • 0.5 cup walnut pieces chopped
  • tablespoons water cold
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar white

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
  2. Sift together flour, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Dissolve baking soda in hot water.
  3. Mix together shortening, sugar, molasses and egg until creamy.
  4. Mix in the flour mixture alternately with the cold water.
  5. Mix in the baking soda and most of the walnuts, reserving a few to sprinkle on tops of cookies.
  6. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet, spacing 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake these for 12 minutes or until done.
