Okay, fellow food adventurers, buckle up because we're about to dive headfirst into a world of edible trickery with these Trompe L'oeil Bagels with Cream Cheese! Forget everything you thought you knew about breakfast, because this isn't just food, it's an experience.

Imagine the look on your friends' faces when you present them with what appears to be a perfectly ordinary bagel and cream cheese. Then, the gasp of disbelief as they realize it's a delightful confectionery deception! This gluten-free wonder comes together in just 10 minutes, perfect for those mornings when you want a little bit of whimsy with your caffeine kick.

What I love most about this recipe is the sheer audacity of it. It's a playful rebellion against the mundane, a sugary salute to creativity in the kitchen. The smooth, rich vanilla buttercream frosting, generously slathered between the poppy-seed studded "bagel" halves, is pure indulgence. It's also surprisingly fun to make. Whether you're a seasoned baker or a kitchen newbie, this recipe is incredibly approachable. It gives you the tools to whip up a visual masterpiece in no time.

And don't even get me started on the flavor. The sweetness of the doughnut, coupled with the creamy, dreamy frosting, is a match made in dessert heaven. These Trompe L'oeil Bagels are more than just a treat; they're a conversation starter, a guaranteed mood-booster, and a testament to the power of culinary illusion.

Ingredients

  • cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 0.3 cup cup heavy whipping cream
  •  round cake plain
  • serving sesame seed for topping
  • cup butter unsalted softened
  • teaspoons vanilla extract

Equipment

  • bowl
  • stand mixer
  • microwave
  • pastry brush

Directions

  1. For the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting: In the stand mixer with the paddle attachment, mix the butter on medium speed until it is very fluffy.
  2. Add 4 cups of the confectioners' sugar, and mix on low speed until smooth and incorporated. Pause to scrape down the sides of the bowl, and add the cream and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until smooth and creamy, 3 to 5 minutes, continuing to add sugar until it has reached your desired consistency. If your frosting becomes too stiff, you can thin it out by adding more cream, but be careful to add the cream in small (teaspoon) increments so that the frosting does not become too thin.
  3. Slice the doughnut horizontally in half.
  4. In a small microwave-safe dish, melt the butter by heating it in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Using a pastry brush, lightly brush the top side of the doughnut with the melted butter (oh, get over it—they’re already fried, anyway). Immediately sprinkle poppy seeds on top of the buttered halves. Some seeds will fall off, but enough will stick to give you the right effect.
  5. Apply a generous dollop of frosting to the bottom half of the doughnut and gently spread it to the edges. Note: it’s very important that the frosting be at room temperature, because if it is cold the doughnut may break apart when you try to spread it.
  6. Put the poppy seed-laden piece on top and consume immediately. Not to boss you around or anything, but they taste great with coffee.
