Ingredients

  • 2.5 teaspoons anise seeds 
  • 0.8 teaspoon double-acting baking powder 
  •  egg white lightly beaten
  •  eggs lightly beaten
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • 0.3 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.5 cup sugar 
  • 1.5 tablespoons sugar 
  • teaspoons vanilla extract 
  • tablespoons vegetable oil 
  • teaspoon water

Directions

  1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Combine oil, vanilla, and eggs, and add to flour mixture, stirring until well-blended.
  3. Turn dough out onto a baking sheet coated with cooking spray; shape dough into a 12-inch-long roll, and flatten to 1/2-inch thickness.
  4. Combine water and egg white; stir well.
  5. Brush over dough.
  6. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.
  7. Remove from baking sheet to a wire rack, and let cool. Slice roll diagonally into 26 (1/2-inch) slices.
  8. Place slices, cut sides down, on a baking sheet.
  9. Brush slices with egg white mixture, and sprinkle evenly with turbinado sugar.
  10. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until dry.
  11. Let cool on wire racks.
  12. Note: 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar may be substituted for the 1 1/2 tablespoons turbinado sugar.
