  • tablespoon double-acting baking powder 
  • teaspoons baking soda 
  • cups buttermilk 
  •  eggs beaten
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • cups shortening 
  • cups sugar 
  • 72 servings optional: colored sugar 
  • 16 oz butter cream frosting 
  • tablespoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Blend together sugar, shortening and eggs.
  2. Add vanilla and buttermilk.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into sugar mixture.
  4. Add more flour as needed to make a firm dough.
  5. Chill for 2 to 3 hours or overnight.
  6. On a floured surface, roll out dough to a 1/4-inch thickness.
  7. Cut out with cookie cutters; place on greased baking sheets.
  8. Bake at 350 degrees for 7 to 8 minutes.
  9. Let cool. Frost and decorate as desired.
