  • cup sugar 
  • 0.5 cup shortening 
  • teaspoon vanilla 
  •  eggs 
  • 0.7 cup flour all-purpose
  • 0.5 cup cocoa powder 
  • 0.5 teaspoon double-acting baking powder 
  • 0.3 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.5 cup pecans coarsely chopped
  • 12  individually wrapped caramels 
  • tablespoon milk

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 350°. Grease bottom and sides of square pan, 8x8x2
  2. or 9x9x2 inches, with shortening.
  3. Mix sugar, shortening, vanilla and
  4. eggs in large bowl. Stir in flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt.
  5. Spread
  6. in pan.
  7. Sprinkle with pecans.
  8. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes
  9. out clean.
  10. Heat caramels and milk in 1-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring
  11. frequently, until caramels are melted.
  12. Drizzle over warm brownies. Cool
  13. completely, about 1 hour. For brownies, cut into 4 rows by 4 rows.
