  • teaspoon baking soda 
  • 0.5 cup butter 
  • 0.5 cup buttermilk 
  • large eggs lightly beaten
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon 
  • 12 servings chocolate icing 
  • 0.1 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.5 cup shortening 
  • cups sugar 
  • 0.3 cup cocoa unsweetened
  • teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • cup water

Directions

  1. Sift together sugar and next 4 ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Stir together butter and next 3 ingredients in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, 5 minutes or just until butter and shortening melt.
  3. Remove from heat; pour over sugar mixture, stirring until dissolved. Cool slightly.
  4. Stir in buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla.
  5. Pour into a greased and lightly floured 15- x 10-inch jelly-roll pan.
  6. Bake at 350 for 30 to 35 minutes. (Cake will have a fudge-like texture.)
  7. Spread Chocolate Icing over hot cake.
  8. Serve with vanilla ice cream, if desired.
