Ingredients

  • 0.8 teaspoon baking soda 
  • 0.8 cup brown sugar packed
  • 0.3 cup butter softened
  • cups powdered sugar 
  • 1.3 cups dates chopped
  •  eggs 
  • 1.3 cups flour all-purpose
  • 0.3 cup milk 
  • 0.5 cup orange juice 
  • teaspoon orange zest grated
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • ounces semi chocolate chips 
  • cup walnut pieces chopped
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

  1. In a saucepan, combine the dates, sugar, water and butter. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until dates are softened.
  2. Remove from heat; stir in chocolate chips.
  3. Beat eggs, milk and orange juice.
  4. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to date mixture alternately with orange juice mixture, mixing well after each addition. Stir in walnuts.
  5. Pour into a greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan.
  6. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool.
  7. Combine confectioners' sugar, butter and orange peel; stir in milk until glaze reaches desired consistency.
  8. Spread over bars.
