  • 0.1 teaspoon pepper black freshly ground
  • inch diagonally bread baguette french toasted cut
  • teaspoon butter 
  • 0.1 teaspoon thyme leaves dried
  • 0.3 cup cooking wine dry red
  • 1.5 cups less-sodium chicken broth fat-free
  • tablespoons gruyère cheese grated
  • cups onion thinly sliced ( 2 medium)
  • 0.3 teaspoon sugar 
  • 1.5 cups water

Directions

  1. To prepare soup, melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add onion, sugar, and pepper to pan. Cook 15 minutes or until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Stir in wine; cook 2 minutes or until wine almost evaporates.
  3. Add broth, 1 1/2 cups water, and thyme; bring to a boil. Cook until reduced to 2 1/2 cups (about 15 minutes).
  4. Place 1 1/4 cups soup into each of 2 ovenproof soup bowls.
  5. Place bowls on a baking sheet.
  6. Preheat broiler.
  7. Top each serving with 1 slice baguette.
  8. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon cheese over each serving. Broil for 3 minutes or until cheese melts.
  9. Serve immediately.
