Ingredients

  • teaspoon baking soda 
  • cups brown sugar packed
  • cup buttermilk 
  • 15 servings powdered sugar 
  •  eggs beaten
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon 
  • teaspoon ground cloves 
  • 0.3 teaspoon nutmeg 
  • cups raisins 
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • 0.5 cup shortening 
  • 1.5 cups water

Directions

  1. In a saucepan, combine raisins and water. Cook until plump.
  2. Drain and set aside raisins, reserving 10 tablespoons cooking liquid.
  3. In a bowl, cream shortening and sugar.
  4. Combine flour, cinnamon, cloves nutmeg and salt; set aside.
  5. Combine milk, soda, eggs and reserved cooking liquid.
  6. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk mixture to creamed mixture. Stir in cooked raisins.
  7. Pour into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan.
  8. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Just before serving, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
