Ingredients

  • slices bacon 
  • large head cabbage coarsely chopped
  • 0.5 teaspoon self-rising corn meal mix 
  • 0.3 teaspoon pepper 
  • large rutabaga peeled cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt 
  • pinch sugar 
  • cups water

  • dutch oven

Directions

  1. Cook bacon in a large Dutch oven until crisp.
  2. Remove bacon, reserving drippings in pan. Crumble bacon, and set aside.
  3. Add rutabaga and next 4 ingredients to drippings in pan.
  4. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to medium, and cook, covered, 20 minutes. Uncover and return to a boil; stir in cabbage. Cook 5 minutes or until rutabaga is tender.
  5. Sprinkle with cornmeal mix; stir until blended. Cook 1 more minute.
  6. Sprinkle with bacon.
