Ingredients

  • teaspoons double-acting baking powder 
  • teaspoon baking soda 
  • cup brown sugar packed
  •  eggs 
  • cups flour all-purpose
  • teaspoon nutmeg 
  • cup milk 
  • teaspoon salt 
  • cup shortening 
  • teaspoon vanilla extract 
  • tablespoon vinegar white
  • cup granulated sugar white

Directions

  1. Combine milk with vinegar to make sour milk.
  2. Let stand for 5 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine sugars, shortening, eggs, and vanilla.
  4. Add flour, soda, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  5. Stir in sour milk and mix well. NOTE: Dough will be very sticky and hard to handle. You could refrigerate it for a few hours, or just use plenty of flour when rolling out.
  6. Roll on well floured board to 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Cut with cookie cutters to desired shapes (large cutters work best).
  8. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly brown on bottom.
  9. Frost with Sugar Cookie Frosting (see recipe) and decorate.
